Schlink Foundation Grant Guidelines

Purpose of Grant Guidelines

These guidelines are intended to assist the grantee in determining the appropriateness of applying for a grant from The Albert G. & Olive H. Schlink Foundation (The Foundation) as well as the procedure and timing for doing so. All grant applications receive careful consideration and thoughtful evaluation by the board. While the board has no set geographic limitations, it does give special consideration to grant requests from organizations located in Ohio and preferably benefiting Erie and Huron Counties. There are no preset minimum or maximum grant requests amount limitations.

General Restrictions

  • All organizations must be able to represent that they are exempt from federal income tax under Section 501(c)(3) and are not a private foundation, as of the date of the grant request or as of any time during the funding period, within the meaning of appropriate Internal Revenue laws.
  • Churches, schools, governmental or other entities covered by a group exemption are eligible for funding but must provide a copy of the group exemption letter and documentation of the organization’s inclusion within the group.
  • Multi-year grants may carry stipulations that no additional request will be made of The Foundation for a minimum of three (3) years following the payment of the last installment of a multi-year grant.
  • Generally, grants are not made to individuals for any purposes; for the construction of statues, memorials or the like; for the purchase of blocks of tickets, advertising or sponsorships; to cover deficits or for placement in an escrow fund or for debt reduction; for basic research or the evaluation of existing projects; for political purposes or lobbying activity; or for routine operating expenses or salaries/benefits of organization staff.
  • Grants will not be made to any institution, regardless of Internal Revenue status, which in policy or in actual practice, discriminate against individuals in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights act of 1964 or any state or local antidiscrimination statutes.

Deadlines

Generally, grants are made once a year. Grants may be made at other times, throughout the year, at the sole discretion of the board.

To be considered timely, grant applications must be received on or before October 31st in the year in which you are seeking funding. Grant requests received on or before October 31st and approved by the board will be paid out in January of the following year. There are no restrictions on reapplying if your grant request is denied. Grant applications received after October 31st will be denied funding or considered for approval for the subsequent grant year at The Foundation’s sole discretion. This guideline is intended to assist the grantee in timing its application and for the convenience of The Foundation’s board. This guideline is not intended to bind the board to any particular approval and/or payout schedule.

Communication

The Foundation makes all its funding decisions as a board. All grant applications are circulated to all members of the board before the grant application is considered. Each member has the same information and the same opportunity to review all grant applications. Therefore, we normally do not meet with representatives of the applying organization nor do we engage in lengthy telephone conversations. Board members do not engage in discussions with applicants regarding outcomes of pending grant applications. This way, each applicant has equal access to the board via the application process and no organization has any advantage over any other organization or is treated differently.

Thank you for considering The Albert G. & Olive H. Schlink Foundation for your funding needs.
